Psychology for IB students
In progressing to IB level students will develop an understanding of the biological, social and cultural influences on human behaviour. Students will learn about the different theoretical processes of interpreting behaviour and how these processes lead to the construction and evaluation of psychological theories. In the field of psychological research there are many ethical practices and responsibilities, students will gain knowledge about these issues and come to understand the role that they play.

Psychology is a great subject for those interested in people. All those that claim to enjoy “people watching” are in some way already involving themselves in the subject: observing behaviour, and considering influences on that behaviour and how that translates into particular traits. This really is a fascinating, mind-broadening subject, which can be taken at standard, or higher level. Both levels have written and external examinations, essays and analysis assignments and, throughout the course, students should be proactive in lessons by asking questions and contributing to classroom discussion and debate.

Assessment
In general terms, standard and higher level subjects are both studied throughout years 12 and 13. There are no examinations in Year 12 as all IB examinations take place in May of Year 13. In addition to the examinations you must complete a CAS journal, the theory of knowledge component and an extended essay. Each subject studied carries seven points and final grades are awarded according to a points system. The maximum mark is 45 points, made up of a potential seven points for each of the six subjects, plus three points that are available for the theory of knowledge and extended essay components.

In relation to psychology, all second year IB students will conduct an experimental/research study, which will be internally assessed. At standard level external assessment focuses on two examination papers, collectively offering 80% of available marks, while internal assessment of a simple experimental study accounts for the remaining 20% of the marks that can be awarded. At the higher level there are three written papers offering 80% of available marks and internal assessment of an experimental study provides the potential gain the remaining 20% of the overall marks.

Enrichment activities
Students are encouraged to volunteer for work in local hospitals and for local charities. Such placements offer opportunities to learn through observation, as well as learning from others outside of the school environment. These placements are also practical from a personal development perspective and provide valuable additions to CVs and application forms.

Beyond the sixth form
A firm foundation and knowledge of psychology is essential to students wishing to follow the subject at university level. It also has value for those interested in pursuing higher education or employment in fields such as psychology, sociology, social work, nursing, law and many other professions.
