English for IB students Students taking English at IB level will study drama, prose and poetry texts from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. This will involve adopting a meticulous approach to the study of the different genre covered and students will need to view texts in a wider context than would be required at A Level. Indeed, the ability to look at and understand “the bigger picture” is a defining feature of IB study. IB English is closely connected to some of the issues raised by the theory of knowledge element of the IB course and aims to support students’ learning in that area too. All students will study the standard level syllabus and those wishing to do so may extend their studies and take English at a higher level. This exciting and varied course greatly enhances study skills, builds firmly upon existing foundations in English and encourages students to expand their perceptions of the subject. Assessment Standard and higher level subjects are both studied throughout years 12 and 13. There are no examinations in Year 12 as all IB examinations take place in May of Year 13. In addition to the examinations you must complete a CAS journal, the theory of knowledge component and an extended essay. Each subject studied carries seven points and final grades are awarded according to a points system. The maximum mark is 45 points, made up of a potential seven points for each of the six subjects, plus three points that are available for the theory of knowledge and extended essay components. Enrichment activities To add to their learning, students can participate in a creative writing group and a reading club. Beyond the sixth form A firm understanding and practical abilities in English will be vital to all students whether they leave the sixth form seeking further education, or employment. Qualifications in English will be required by students looking to enter further education. For those with a love of English there are many fascinating career paths to consider such as teaching, journalism, media and broadcasting, to name just a few.
