| General Studies
General Studies in the sixth form General studies is a course designed to open the mind, create awareness, build upon key skills and enhance learning in the broader sense. Students will cover a number of live issues including topics such as culture, morality, science and religion. By exploring these issues, students are encouraged to think about the world around them, how it works as it does, and why. This develops a broad range of skills that will be useful beyond the course itself. Critical thinking will underpin students’ work as they research the issues covered. They will learn, at a higher level, how to analyse, interpret and evaluate their research findings. Students can use these skills immediately to enhance their work and potential in their other A Level subjects. As a further extension to the valuable skills base offered by general studies, students will need to collate, present and communicate their findings, being able to argue points and effectively express their opinions. Assessment Work will be assessed via coursework and examination. Coursework continues throughout the course, the AS examination takes place in year 12, the A2 examination in year 13. A pass at AS level is essential for those wishing to follow the course at A2 level. Coursework accounts for 30% of the available marks and 70% of the final mark will be based upon examination results. Enrichment activities Students will have opportunities to make several relevant outside visits to enrich the work covered in class. Visits to museums, law courts and cultural events will all add to the value of this course. Beyond the sixth form Whether a student is considering further education or employment, the wide-ranging skills gained through general studies will serve them well. These skills can be applied effectively in many fields from teaching, through psychology and sport sciences to management; whatever the area, general studies has something to offer.
