Geography in the sixth form During their A Level course, students will study tectonic processes, fluvial and coastal processes, glaciation, meteorology and ecosystems. In addition, students will explore economic activity and development, and rural patterns and processes.
Our A level geography course looks at elements of physical geography and combines those with a study of the human aspects of the subject. In this way the course provides a deep, rounded understanding of the subject in a live and relevant way.
Assessment Work will usually be assessed via examination. Optional coursework can be selected in place of a skills examination, in this instance 20% of available marks can be gained via coursework with the examination accounting for the remaining 80% of the available marks. The AS examination takes place in year 12, the A2 examination in year 13. A pass at AS level is essential for those wishing to follow the course at A2 level.
Enrichment activities We run a field course, which is essential for pupils on A Level and International Baccalaureate courses. This valuable course enables them to learn many essential fieldwork techniques. Pupils are encouraged to attend the lecture course arranged by Royal Holloway College for sixth form students. Where it is appropriate to do so we arrange other field visits and excursions to enrich students’ understanding of geography.
Beyond the sixth form Geography is a valuable subject. In specific terms it will help students who wish to follow further education and careers in areas such as land management, environmental consultancy and economic development. Because geography creates an understanding of the world around us, it can also be constructive in careers such as economics, politics and business.
