Physical Education in the sixth form Sixth form students taking physical education at A Level will be able to participate in a range of sports, including: football, netball, table tennis, badminton, basketball, weight training, aerobics, cricket, rounders and softball. In addition to physical participation in the sports listed above, A Level students will undertake relevant complementary academic studies. This course of study will focus on anatomy and physiology, acquisition of skill, sociology of sport, historical studies of sport, exercise physiology, biomechanics and psychology. Beyond the direct benefits of preparing students for their A Level examinations and ensuring a degree of physical activity, students will gain confidence, interpersonal and team based skills, leadership skills, and an ability to observe and analyse. Sixth form students not seeking an A Level qualification in the subject will still be able to access a range of physical and sporting activities via our complimentary studies programme. Assessment Work will be assessed via coursework and examination. Coursework continues throughout the course, the AS examination takes place in year 12, the A2 examination in year 13. A pass at AS level is essential for those wishing to follow the course at A2 level. 70% of the available marks can be gained through written papers with the remaining 30% being available from assessed practical work. Equipment Students must bring appropriate kit for all PE lessons and sports clubs. Kit lists can be found on the uniform page (you can use the link at the foot of the page to go straight there). Enrichment activities We provide various extracurricular opportunities; in fact, it’s quite a list! Students can participate in clubs for netball, football, hockey, gymnastics, athletics, rounders, cricket, badminton, table tennis, basketball and even skiing! Beyond the sixth form An advanced level qualification in physical education will be invaluable for any student considering studying PE at university level. It will also prove useful in other areas such as pursuing a career in sports, nursing, physiotherapy, or leisure.
