Biology in the sixth form Building upon the wide-ranging topics covered at GCSE level, students taking biology at A Level will study further units dealing with biological molecules, enzymes, nucleic acids, gene technology, ecology and physiology. These units explore the subject of biology in detail, in a manner that will prepare students well for further education. Work is carried out in our well-equipped laboratories and learning is progressed with a consistent emphasis on personal enquiry and investigation. Students will use IT consistently in the presentation and communication of their experiments and findings. At A Level, research becomes more important and students will discover research methods that will allow them to address their scientific curiosity. Assessment Work will be assessed via coursework and examination. Coursework continues throughout the course, the AS examination takes place in year 12, the A2 examination in year 13. A pass at AS level is essential for those wishing to follow the course at A2 level. Enrichment activities To enhance what is learnt in the laboratory, we offer regular field trips where students can add to their understanding of the subject by studying a variety of organisms in their natural ecosystems. Beyond school Qualifications in biology will prepare students for further education placements in biology and related science subjects. Biology is a practical qualification for those seeking further education or employment in areas such as research, agriculture, medicine, industry and the environmental sciences.
