Physics in the sixth form
Physics is an ideal subject for those interested in how our universe works, who like solving practical and theoretical problems individually and as part of a team. Students will take their understanding of physics to an advanced level by studying a range of themes in detail. These will include mechanics, radioactivity, electricity, thermal physics, fields, forces, waves and our universe. Students will learn the theories and principals that apply to these themes in order to gain core knowledge. This theoretical knowledge will be put into context as students investigate how these principals are used and applied in the real world.

Students will also be able to select one optional module from a choice of four themes: medical physics, astrophysics, solid materials and nuclear physics. The optional, and set, topics are introduced and progressed in a practical way and students can look forward to considerable “hands-on”, practical experience.

A Level physics is a far-reaching, content rich subject, ideal for those with an enquiring mind!

Assessment
Students are tested at the end of each module and these informal tests help us to help students identify their strengths and weaknesses as we move closer to examinations. Formally, students sit their AS examination at the end of year 12. In year 13 students sit a mock examination in the spring term and the final A2 examination takes place in June. There are short practical examinations in years 12 and 13. These form an integral part of the course and account for 20% of the AS mark and 17.5% of the A2 mark.

Enrichment activities
Students will have the opportunity to visit places of physical interest and to attend lectures and short courses. All of these activities will enhance and enrich what is learnt in class.

Beyond the sixth form
Advanced qualifications in physics will be useful for those students wishing to gain a university placement in pursuit of a professional degree course such as engineering, science, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, actuary, sport and teaching.
