Psychology in the sixth form
In the first year of this A Level course students will learn about psychology through a series of units dealing with: developmental and cognitive psychology, physiological and individual differences, social psychology (looking at areas such as conformity and obedience). These units are complemented by the exploration of research methods.

Building upon the knowledge gained in year one, year two will lead students to explore: social psychology, dealing with stereotypes, prejudice and pro/anti social behaviour; our developmental progress, looking at how we learn, intelligence, moral development, personality and gender development; individual differences, issues of gender, culture and ethics, and our approaches (psycho-dynamic, behavioural, cognitive and biological).

The ability to think, absorb theoretical ideas, think critically, interpret and communicate is essential and these abilities will be strengthened and enhanced by the course.

Psychology is a great subject for students interested in people. It is also a course for those who are happy to work hard and write a lot!

Assessment
Work will be assessed via coursework and examination. Coursework continues throughout the course, the AS examination takes place in year 12, the A2 examination in year 13. A pass at AS level is essential for those wishing to follow the course at A2 level.

Enrichment activities
Students are encouraged to volunteer for work in local hospitals and for local charities. Such placements offer opportunities to learn through observation, as well as learning from others outside of the school environment. These placements are also practical from a personal development perspective and provide valuable additions to CVs and application forms.

Beyond the sixth form
A Level psychology is of particular importance to students wishing to follow the subject at university level. It also has value for those interested in pursuing higher education or employment in fields such as psychology, sociology, social work, nursing, law and many other professions.
