Religious Studies in the sixth form A Level religious studies provides an incomparable opportunity for the personal exploration of religious, philosophical and ethical issues.
Students may select one religion, or more, as the basis of their study. The course puts particular emphasis on examining the origins of religious authority; students will consider how scriptures and human experience have produced the spiritual paths that come out of such authority. Students will come to know of the historical foundations, central teachings, concepts and importance of traditional practices within the religion they have chosen to study. Ethical theory is explored and students will consider the basis upon which people make moral decisions.
The course also introduces students to the issue of religion and science - analysing religious understanding of scientific theories like the “big-bang” or the theory of evolution.
Beyond academic issues, students taking this course will develop a range of practical, theological, intellectual, social and communication skills necessary for religious and philosophical enquiry. They will possess the ability to observe, collect, interpret, analyse, evaluate and communicate information relating to religion and philosophy.
Assessment Work will be assessed via examination. The AS examination takes place in year 12, the A2 examination in year 13. A minimum pass of grade C at AS level is essential for those wishing to follow the course at A2 level.
Beyond the sixth form As our world shrinks and cross-cultural interaction becomes the norm, business leaders are looking for people who demonstrate understanding and empathy in their relationships with others, no matter what cultural differences may exist. Religious studies exposes students to these issues and helps to create the understanding our changing world demands. Whatever career path is followed, a sense of self, an understanding of ones connection with others and an empathy with others is an essential quality - without doubt A Level religious studies enhances these qualities within students.
