Chemistry in the sixth form Having taken GCSE chemistry, students will have a firm foundation of knowledge to build upon. At A Level, students look at chemistry in greater depth and detail. Working with a number of set themes students will learn about elements, fuels, oceans, atmosphere, agriculture, medicines, polymers, proteins and the chemical industry. The course content is broad and allows students to consider the application of chemistry in relation to different disciplines and career paths, thus opening their minds to future opportunities as well as proving a solid grounding in this fascinating subject. Assessment Work will be assessed via coursework and examination. Coursework continues throughout the course, the AS examination takes place in year 12, the A2 examination in year 13. A pass at AS level is essential for those wishing to follow the course at A2 level. At both AS and A2 level coursework accounts for 30% of the available marks and 70% of the final mark will be based upon examination results. Enrichment activities Sixth form students can participate in the ICI Young Scientists programme; an activity that enhances what is learnt in class and puts chemistry into context. To provide a contextualised view of the subject an industrial visit is arranged for year 12 students. Beyond the sixth form Qualifications in chemistry will be essential to those seeking a university placement, particularly where degree subjects such as chemistry, medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are being considered. Employment options could exist in the areas mentioned above, or include other sectors such as biochemistry, research, oil, gas, and the petrochemical industry.
