All pupils are taught Latin in Years 7 to 8. From Year 9 pupils may opt to take Latin at GCSE level.
Latin in Years 7 to 8
In Years 7 to 8 we use the Cambridge Latin Course. This two unit course enables pupils to translate and comprehend straightforward stories and gain an insight into the background civilisation of the Romans in Pompeii, Britain and Egypt.
Learning Latin provides rigorous linguistic training and a sound historical grounding in the roots of a language that has influenced many of the languages in use today. Indeed, many of the words we use ourselves have their origins in Latin; an understanding of this intriguing fact adds richness and context to the study of other languages. Teacher Assessments of pupils’ Key Stage 3 Latin capabilities take place in the summer term of Year 8.
GCSE Latin from Year 9
Pupils taking Latin at GCSE level will study the works of various Roman authors by investigating short excerpts from famous literary works. The study of Latin at this level will encourage pupils to develop comprehension, appreciation, understanding and sensitivity to different cultures.
GCSE assessment
Work will be assessed via coursework and examination. Coursework continues throughout Years 10 and 11, the GCSE examination takes place either in Year 10 or Year 11, according to the individual learning needs and progress of each pupil.
Beyond GCSE
The school offers AS and A2 level Classical Civilisation to sixth form students. Latin may be studied as a twilight option at this level.
Beyond school
Study and qualifications in Latin will be useful to those seeking further education or employment in areas such as languages, classical studies, history, linguistics and research.
