All pupils are taught Food Technology in Years 7 to 8. From Year 9, pupils may opt to take Food Technology at GCSE level.
Food Technology in years 7 to 8
In year 7 pupils will focus on healthy eating, dealing with diet and nutrition. Practical work adds context to the theoretical aspects of the course and develops practical skills. In year 8 the focus shifts to food from other countries (with good links to our language college facilities). Having researched food from a country of their choice, pupils will create and develop a new dish based upon what they have learned. In year 9 pupils create foods with edible casings, such as bread and pastry. As part of this they will consider the use of computer aided design and manufacture and the role this plays in the food industry. Teacher Assessments of pupils’ skills, knowledge and understanding in Key Stage 3 Food Technology take place in the summer term of Year 8.
GCSE Food Technology from Year 9
Having gained a range of practical skills, knowledge of nutrition and an insight into food production, pupils build upon that as they develop coursework and prepare for their GCSE examination.
GCSE assessment
Work will be assessed via coursework and examination. Coursework continues throughout years 10 and 11, the GCSE examination takes place either in Year 10 or Year 11, according to the individual learning needs and progress of each pupil.
Enrichment activities
Pupils are encouraged to recognise the part that ICT plays in the modern food industry and to use technology to enhance their own work.
Beyond GCSE
The school offers AS and A2 level Food Technology to sixth form students.
Beyond school
Pupils wishing to consider expanding their interest in food technology into a career can consider seeking further education or employment in areas such as food production and food marketing.
