All pupils are taught Textile Technology in Years 7 to 9. In Years 10 and 11 pupils may opt to take Textile Technology or Textile Art at GCSE level.
Textile Technology in Years 7 to 8
Pupils work through a range of projects at Key Stage 3 developing understanding and skills in research, design, manufacture, production and retailing. Pupils will also gain an understanding of the sources of fibres and fabrics, and the advances in the scientific aspects of textile development. There will be opportunities for pupils to develop and produce highly skilled products ranging from bags and cushions to wall hangings. Teacher Assessments of pupils’ Key Stage 3 Textiles capabilities take place in the summer term of Year 8.
GCSE Textile Technology from Year 9
In Years 10 and 11 pupils can build upon their knowledge obtained at Key Stage 3 through product analysis and "design and make" assignments. Pupils undertake one major coursework piece, which requires pupils to develop their capabilities and skills within this area when researching, developing ideas, planning, producing and evaluating their final product.
GCSE assessment
Work will be assessed via one major coursework piece and an examination. Coursework continues throughout Years 10 and 11, the GCSE examination takes place either in Year 10 or Year 11, according to individual pupils’ progress and learning needs. Coursework accounts for 60% of the available marks and 40% of the final mark will be based upon examination results.
GCSE Textile Art from year 9
Textile art is an exploration of fabrics and fibres for those with a particular interest in colour, pattern and surface decoration. Pupils will have the opportunity to work with a range of media and techniques such as: machine embroidery, printing, felt making and computer transfer. Pupils will have opportunities to create innovative and distinctive 2D/3D textile pieces. Work is carried out in sketchbooks to show ideas, development, progression and media testing.
GCSE assessment
Work will be assessed via 2 coursework units and a practical examination. Coursework continues throughout Years 10 and 11, the GCSE examination takes place either in Year 10 or Year 11. Coursework accounts for 60% of the available marks and 40% of the final mark will be based upon examination results.

The school offers AS and A2 level Textile Art to sixth form students
Beyond School
Qualifications in Textile Art can lead on to a foundation course placement at college or university, or even lead on to a degree course placement. It can lead to further education and employment in such areas as: Designing (fashion/interior), manufacturing, buying and retailing, merchandising, fashion public relations, fashion journalism, fashion stylist, fashion photography, prediction and forecasting and other textile art based disciplines.
