All pupils are taught History in Years 7 to 8. A teacher assessment of pupils’ Key Stage 3 History knowledge and skills will take place in the school examinations in May of Year 8. From Year 9 onwards, pupils may opt to take history at GCSE level.
History in Years 7 to 8
History is a broad and fascinating subject that helps all of us to put into context many of the events taking place around us. Knowledge of what has happened in the past greatly influences our understanding of what is happening today. History delivers this understanding, as well as being an important part of a rounded general education.
By exploring various periods of history ranging from the Romans and Anglo-Saxons, through the Victorian Era and World History, to modern British history, pupils will learn core skills relevant to history and beyond. Pupils will develop chronological understanding, an ability to make and interpret historical enquiries, a sense of personal and local history, and of course knowledge and understanding of particular periods of history.
GCSE History from Year 9
The work covered, and skills learnt, during Key Stage 3 will prepare pupils well for history at GCSE level. From Year 9 they will go on to explore specific historical periods of the modern world including: the international scene 1919 - 1939, Germany from 1919 to 1939, Great Britain and World War II, and the Cold War period of 1945 - 1953. Pupils working towards their GCSE will prepare a body of coursework based around studies of World War I and the USA between 1919 and 1939.
GCSE assessment
Work will be assessed via coursework and examination. Coursework continues throughout Years 10 and 11, the GCSE examination takes place either in year 10 or year 11 depending upon the individual learning needs and profile of the pupil. Coursework accounts for 25% of the available marks and 75% of the final mark will be based upon examination results.
Enrichment activities
We take every opportunity to enrich what is learnt in class by involving pupils in activities that bring the subject to life. Pupils will visit the Imperial War Museum, attend history lecture days and see theatrical performances based upon historical topics.
Beyond GCSE
The school offers AS and A2 level History to sixth form students.
Beyond school
Qualifications in History are particularly relevant to those seeking further education at University or employment in areas such as history, archaeology, English, politics, government, law, and business.
