All pupils are taught Chemistry in Years 7 to 8. Pupils’ Key Stage 3 knowledge of Chemistry is assessed in national SATS tests which will be administered in May of Year 8. From Year 9, pupils may opt to take chemistry as one of their science options at GCSE level.

Chemistry in Years 7 to 8
Pupils will learn about Chemistry by working through a series of appropriate themes. By exploring materials, patterns and reactions they will gain a practical understanding of the subject. The knowledge gained forms part of a rounded education and provides the basis for further learning should they opt to take Chemistry at GCSE level.

GCSE Chemistry from Year 9
Pupils taking GCSE chemistry will learn their subject in greater depth by gaining knowledge of the periodic table, qualitative analysis, industrial processes and kinetics. Pupils are well prepared for their GCSE examinations, learning in both practical and theoretical terms.

GCSE assessment
We test pupils at the end of each module and record marks to help us help pupils to identify their strengths and weaknesses as we move closer to the final examination. Work will be assessed via coursework, modular examinations and a final examination. Coursework is carried out at regular intervals during years 10 and 11. Modular GCSE examinations will be held in November, March and May, with the final GCSE examination at the end year 10 or year 11.

Enrichment activities
As well as being able to join the school’s chemistry club pupils will have the opportunity to become involved in the ICI Young Scientists programme. Both of these activities enhance what pupils learn in class and are instrumental in developing deeper interest and understanding of the part played by chemistry in the wider world.

Beyond GCSE
The school offers AS and A2 level Chemistry to sixth form students. Chemistry can also be selected as a subject by those opting to take the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

Beyond school
Qualifications in chemistry will be beneficial to those seeking a university placement, particularly where degree subjects such as medicine, dentistry and pharmacy are being considered.
