All pupils are taught Biology in Years 7 to 8. Pupils’ Key Stage 3 knowledge of Biology will be assessed in national SATS tests held in May of Year 8. From Year 9 pupils may opt to take Biology as one of their science options at GCSE level.
Biology in Years 7 to 8
Pupils will continue to build upon the understanding of living organisms gained at primary school. In Years 7 to 8 they will study Biology via the topics of: cells, reproduction, the environment, variation, classification, food and digestion, respiration, microbes, disease, ecology, inheritance, health and plant science. Covered over three years, these topics provide a firm grounding in the subject and pupils considering taking GCSE Biology will be well prepared for what follows.
GCSE Biology from Year 9
Pupils will continue their studies at a deeper level as they produce a body of coursework and prepare for their GCSE examination. From Year 9 pupils will cover the nervous system, hormones, homeostasis, plant transport, plant growth, evolution, gene technology and biotechnology.
Throughout their studies pupils will be working in well-equipped laboratories and scientific investigation will provide a consistent theme.
GCSE assessment
We test pupils at the end of each module and record marks to help us help pupils to identify their strengths and weaknesses as we move closer to the final examination. Work will be assessed via coursework, modular examinations and a final examination. Coursework is carried out at regular intervals during years 10 and 11. Modular GCSE examinations will be held in November, March and May, with the final GCSE examination at the end year 10 or year 11.
Enrichment activities
To enhance what is learnt in class we offer regular field trips where pupils can add to their understanding of the subject by seeing a variety of organisms in their natural ecosystems.
Beyond GCSE
The school offers AS and A2 level Biology to sixth form students. Biology can also be selected as a subject by those opting to take the International Baccalaureate Diploma.
Beyond school
Qualifications in Biology will prepare students for further education placements in Biology and related science subjects. Biology is a practical qualification for those seeking further education at University or employment in areas such as research, agriculture, medicine, industry and the environmental sciences.
